"DICTIONARY OF WAR" - ILLUSTRATIONS
Client:
Vivat Publishing House, Kharkiv, 2023.
author and compiler:
Ostap Slyvinsky
task:
Create a series of illustrations for the inner pages and cover that will complement the stories of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine. The illustrations should be truthful, while also being metaphorical and figurative, so as not to frighten the reader.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
War changes the meaning of words. The "Dictionary of War" was created to document these new meanings of words and the stories of real people, Ukrainians, who have suffered from Russia's occupation actions. These include volunteers, doctors, soldiers, activists, and artists - all those who have had to leave their homes and search for a safe place for themselves and their children.
END Papers
The first endpaper was intended to set the reader on alarm, and the last - to give hope.

FINAL COVER
All illustrations have 2-3 meanings or a hidden metaphor.
Since the book was published by the Kharkiv publishing house, I added several Easter eggs about Kharkiv and its famous places to the plots of the drawings.
Used techniques
The book uses a combination of manual (stamping, stencil, monotyle, applique) and digital techniques.
The basis for many illustrations were textures. I created them using such tools as paper, paint (oil, gouache, ink), fabric imprints, plastic meshes, files, brushes, rollers, dishwashing sponges and tiles.
For simple objects like trees and buildings I used stamping. They were made with apples, potatoes, grape twigs and plums.
